
STUDENT MURIEL SHANNON RECEIVES CONGRESSIONAL AWARDS

Muriel Shannon, 17, a senior at Nampa Christian High School (NCHS), recently earned the Congressional Award Gold Medal. The Congressional Award Program, established by Congress in 1979, recognizes initiative, service, and achievement in American youth. Since Spring 2008, Muriel set and achieved goals in the four program areas which consist of: public service, personal development, physical fitness, and expedition experience. The 1000 hour endeavor included over 400 hours of public service. Muriel is pictured in this August 2010 photo accepting the Congressional Bronze Medal from U.S. Senator Mike Crapo and U.S. Senator Jim Risch at the Idaho State Capitol building. This month, January 2012, Muriel was awarded the Congressional Silver Medal. In June 2012, Muriel will travel to Washington D.C. where she will be honored with the Congressional Gold Medal at the national ceremony on Capitol Hill.
At NCHS, Muriel is a 4.0 student who is Senior Class president, Key Club treasurer and a member of the National Honor Society. She enjoys singing and serving as a pianist in NCHS choirs. Muriel is a National Merit Commended Scholar who was awarded a letter of commendation for her performance on the 2010 PSAT. She is active in her community and has served over 300 hours as a junior volunteer at West Valley Medical Center. Muriel is the daughter of Eric and Laura Shannon of Caldwell.
